“The Cask of Amontillado” is a story written by Edgar Allan Poe in 1846. He is known for writing many tales and poems of horror, a prime example is “The Raven." Not only did he write horror tales and poems but also criticism, fiction. Poe was infamous for his grotesque nature and inglorious for his use of literal assault masked by literary devices that would go over the head of your average Joe. This said style of unique storytelling granted Poe the unofficial title, "The Father of the Detective Stories." “The Cask of Amontillado’ was part of his 1840’s collection in the book, “The Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque."
Suspension that has Poe written “The Cask of Amontillado” surrounding some events of his life. Poe recieved the idea from a personal experience with two writers from a literary publication company in New York City. Hiram Fuller and Dr. Thomas Dunn English were their names, they purposefully mocked Poe’s image, and his writing. These remarks angered Poe. Edgar sought revenge by claiming he has never seen them in which they could not make naive remarks about him. Poe eventually sued the two men for damaging his image and won. It is said that Poe portrayed himself to be Montresor and Thomas Dunn English to be Fortunato. Two of many literary devices used in literate are irony and foreshadowing. Foreshadowing is a structural element used to hint at a future situation or event in a story. Irony is very complex, with many forms. When a character thinks they know a supposed truth but the reader, audience or another form of 4th wall knows the truth, it is labeled Dramatic Irony. When a character is speaking to another character, but whats spoken means something else is an example of Verbal Irony. Poe uses these forms of literary devices fluidly through“The Cask of Amontillado," even the title is a pun on itself.
Poe uses irony in nearly every form of literature he has written.“The Cask of Amontillado” ...
Finally, foreshadowing can be seen when Curley harasses Lennie for not talking and because he is bigger than him. That foreshadows that they might get into a disagreement or an argument possibly a fight. So when George was talking for Lennie, Curley said “let the big guy talk “. But earlier that day George told Candy ,”well he better watch out for Lennie, he aint no fighter but he is strong as a bull” (27). Because Lennie is very strong. Curley doesn’t like bigger guys which Lennie is. So I drew a conclusion that they will most likely fight which they do and Curley was beating Lennie until George told Lennie “GET HIM!” Lennie crushed his hand because of his uncontrollable strength he has.
