The Online Ethics Center (OEC) is a repository of resources on the ethics of science, engineering, and research that help engineers, scientists, scholars, educators, students, and interested citizens understand and address ethically significant topics and problems that arise in the practice and results of science and engineering.

A five-year improvement effort to update and expand site, with new features and content, began in 2014 with an award from the National Science Foundation (NSF). More information about the OEC can be found in the About section .

The Second Language Acquisition Research series presents and explores issues bearing directly on theory construction and/or research methods in the study of second language acquisition. Its titles (both authored and edited volumes) provide thorough and timely overviews of high-interest topics, and include key discussions of existing research findings and their implications. A special emphasis of the series is reflected in the monographs dealing with specific data collection methods or instruments.  Each of these monographs addresses the kinds of research questions for which the method/instrument is best suited, offers extended description of its use, and outlines the problems associated with its use. The volumes in this series will be invaluable to students and scholars alike, and perfect for use in courses on research methodology and in individual research.

Those words, written in 1974, take on even greater significance today.  Considerations of ethics have existed within specific professions and within the curriculum of professional schools from their inception, but in recent years the complexity of this consideration has grown dramatically. Where the term "professional ethics" once signified little more than questions of personal etiquette, it has more recently come to involve pressing new questions of individual and group responsibility. The rapid pace of technological and social change in the fields of medicine, engineering, education, business and law have generated new social choices and responsibilities.

A number of textbooks exist within applied ethics. But as the field is always expanding and at the same time becoming more and more specialized, it is very difficult to give a fair overview of the most important textbooks within applied ethics. However, there is no doubt that some of the most influential works are the pioneering works Singer 1979 on issues like animal ethics, abortion, and environmental ethics and Glover 1977 on the ethics of causing death and saving lives. A number of textbooks cover a wide variety of subjects within applied ethics, for example, Harris 1985 , Oderberg 2000 , and Singer 1979 . Besides these, splendid textbooks exist that have a more narrow scope, such as Rachels 1986 on euthanasia, Bowie 1989 on business ethics, Sumner 2004 on free speech and pornography, and Husak 2002 on the legalization of drugs.
